Geoff Higgins

Painting

Geoff Higgins is an artist that works from his home in Rosedale, Victoria. His works are usually abstracted landscapes, which take inspiration from both the natural and built-environments around him in Gippsland and beyond.

Geoff has been drawing on these landscapes in his artworks for many years. He grew up in Trafalgar and then moved to Geelong to study architecture which gave him an appreciation of form, composition and scale. He has worked with architects and designers and these influences are evident in his current paintings.

Geoff has an interest in the way that the urban landscape is constantly moving outwards towards country areas, in the form of freeways, bridges, houses and graffiti. Sometimes Geoff uses visual memory to construct his works and other times sketches and photographs sites more accurately before painting.

Geoff exhibited ‘The Expanding Landscape’ in the Community Gallery at Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell in 2015, with paintings that explored these themes.

Geoff uses a variety of techniques including dripping house paint, which is flicked onto a large canvas on the ground. A recent series uses this dripping technique combined with more accurate infill painting on plywood. These painting were then covered in a resin topcoat to give the paintings a high gloss finish. He frequently uses vintage frames sourced from op shops and garage sales in these recent works.

He tries to achieve works, which are both complex and minimal in their forms.
